ARRGH MATEY! Welcome to the Cove. The Cove is a great place to get confused about beer. I like beer, and thought I knew what I was talking about until I walked in here. There are SO MANY beers here it will make your head spin (from deciding, the drink induced spinning comes later). Luckily the bartenders are very knowledgeable. Usually I just ask for what I'm feeling and let them decide. "I'd like something easy to drink on the light side". Without hesitation the bartender turns to the cooler cracks one open and pours it into a glass (I still don't remember what it was...hard to pronounce Belgian something something). Normally I would be a little off put by someone assuming that I'm going to drink whatever they put in front me without even looking at the label, but these guys are good (I drank 2). Smoking is allowed everywhere but the booths, which is weird b/c you can smoke at a table 2 ft from the booth. I don't mind either way. Foosball and pool are available. Lots of TV's and Tom will only allow sports. We came here once and the 2 girls I brought and I were the only people there and the bartenders didn't hesitate to say "Hell No Tom would kill us" when the ladies asked for a channel change to non sports. They also have a new room up front that is non-smoking and looks like an old school pub. I haven't sat in this room but it looks nice. p.s. I know this is a bit gauche, but this is a great place to "borrow" glasses from. The shot glasses have pirates on the bottom and they have all the specialty glasses that the vendors provide to "experience" the specialty beers that go with them.

OMG. This is alcohol heaven! They have LITERALLY kind of alcoholic beverage you can think of!

Best bar in Baton Rouge, hands down. The selection of beer alone makes The Cove worthy of that distinction, but then you add the space itself, the crowd (21-40 y/o non-rowdy folks looking to sit and converse over drinks), and the newly added liquor bar. Place is fantastic.

I went here strictly for the tap beers. So if you want info on bottled beers or the liquor side, check other reviews. It appeared to have a great selection. Cool feel in the rooms. I went with a friend and was looking over the list. I suggested a Goze to him, and the bartender, Chris, heard me and added some notes to what I said, confirming I was correct on the style. I was actually pleasantly surprised, as most bars I've been in have not had a very knowledgeable staff. Sad to say, but I probably haven't been to many good places then, but I was doubly shocked because of the location. 1) Strip Mall; 2) Louisiana. I'm not hacking on Louisiana, folks, but the state is not known for its beer culture. Of course, it's slowly getting better with places like Bayou Teche putting out good beers. I think we had 4 beers each, and Chris made some good suggestions. He runs the bar, orders the beer and appears to stay up on things. I felt like he was an asset to the bar, and he was attentive to all his customers, and made good conversation as well. This was a Monday night, and there is a pool table in the tap area. This evening, we found it was "rented" by about 15 guys who brought in monitors and gaming systems. These guys were professional gamers, by the looks of it. They had these huge lap controllers. One dude had a stuffed pokemon (Pichu, after doing some quick research with the co-workers son via picture/text) on his lap while he played. Baton Rouge gets weird, y'all.

Amazing place...great service...incredible selections of great beers. ..even better selection of any type of spirits......even a bar that specializes in old time craft drinks..ambience is unpretentious and laid back....young and old alike will feel welcome..if your in the area do not pass this place by...you won't be dissapointed..

The Cove is hands down one of my favorite spots in Baton Rouge for beer and a casual night out. It's spacious and has several rooms/areas- with a specialty bar that mixes up old fashioneds and other drinks from a by-gone era. Although the lighting is very dark, it's still a great place to gather with friends for a casual evening. The music, which typically consists of 90's grunge, is played at a low enough decible so that you can still hear conversations. The wall murals are also ecclectic and fun, with a pirate theme in the main bar area and pin-up-esque murals in the bathrooms. What sets The Cove apart from other bars in Baton Rouge, in my opinion, is the expertise of the bar staff. Don't know what you want? The bartenders at The Cove know their menu and can recommend something right on target for you. Not to mention the fact that the selection at The Cove is immense (an amazing array of beers from all over the world as well as an impressive selection of whiskey and scotch).

My favorite bar in Baton Rouge along with churchills and the bulldog. Very laid back pirate/speak easy themed. Appropriately, this place is easy to miss. The entrance is sort of small and in a random area. Best liquor selection in town with great beer variety as well. Also has a cigar bar. There are separate private rooms for small parties and the main room with two very large bars. You take one step into this place and you'll realize it's a big step up from the normal class of bars around town.
(5)Chris P.
This is definitely one of the more unique bars in BR. The selection is pretty incredible. If you like a mixed drink, they will make a pretty incredibly one. My only critique is that I like draft beer. Although they have 74 taps, the atmosphere in the back, where only bottled beer and all the hard alcohol is sold is much better. The tap room is much more somber every time I have been there.
(4)Rosemary G.
I stumbled into this place on accident. The bar is in the back. You can purchase hotdogs from the guy at the door. The beer selection is incredible. What are you in the mood for is exactly what you will have. The staff is great, helpful and friendly. The ambiance is chill and I have yet to see a night where the bar tender can't have a conversation with you. There is no need to fight people off the bar to find your drink...it is literally a beer heaven.

As someone who was born and raised in Baton Rouge, but now lives elsewhere, this place is one of the few bars that I visit when going home for the holidays. The beer and spirits selections are extensive, and the staff is friendly. I have to deduct 2 stars because smoking is allowed inside, and there is no real separation between smoking and non smoking areas. Smoky bars are one thing I do not miss about home.

The Cove is a connoisseur's dream with an elite collection of rare beer, world renowned Scotch and Bourbon, masterfully crafted cocktails to please every drinker's wildest desires, all served up by the best bartenders in Baton Rouge! The Cove is in my Top 5 Bars in the country! Yeah, its that good! Like Ahab, I'm always on the hunt for the white whales of the beer world. I've driven hundreds of miles and scheduled long layovers to make pilgrimages to score a bottle of the best the beer world has to offer. The cove saves me the expense of travels by keeping about 475 bottles in house and about 40 drafts in the tap room. This isn't just inflated numbers with most shelf space taken up by brands of the domestic giants, but a highly respectful and well researched collection of the best beers in the world. I would put their list up against anyone's in the country. The list is usually heavy on Belgians. The only thing about the bottle room is to make sure you have a backup. They may be out of a few beers. However the beers I did have were insane! The Scotch game is ridiculous and some rare and coveted bottles on the shelves. I've only had a few, but each was definitely worth the price of admission. Besides having a treasure trove of alcohol, The Cove boasts the best servers in the city that take care of the customer. These people are not here for a job, but booze is their passion and all are very knowledgeable. Chris who runs the tap room is a certified Cicerone. I thought I knew everything about beer and he routinely puts me in my place and makes me look like a child with his Wikipedia like knowledge of fermentia. Cocktail whiz Joey whips up some of the most perfectly made drinks I've ever had. Also, they know scotch and ask you about your preferences and help steer you to the right choice. They all have done things in the past to go the extra mile and make every Cove experience memorable. The decor is kind of sparse but I don't go there for the ambiance. The biggest things I dislike about the Cove is the smoke and location. Other than that, The Cove is almost perfect. Its one of the things I love most about living in Baton Rouge!

They were awarded the dumbest bar rule of all times statue in 2014 for their "No white shirts" rule.

I really can't believe I've lived in Baton Rouge 2 years and never heard of this place. It is definitely a place I would go back to. I have been around the block but never to a place quite like this. My husband would live here if he could. My only complaint is that people are allowed to smoke inside. I was there relatively early so it wasn't bad but I imagine it gets more smokey as the night goes on. My husband drank a $40 shot of aged scotch. They put a piece of chilled marble in to function like ice. Pretty fancy. The rest of the time he drank a beer called Yeastie Boys IPA and raved about it. I kept it real and just drank vodka. The bartender recommended I try the Swedish fish vodka with soda and lime. Sounds disgusting but it was really good. A few times I watched the bartender beat ingredients to a pulp to put in the fancy cocktails which was fun. The women's bathroom is clean and they have a lot of cool stuff on the walls.

Best beer selection in baton rouge by far. Knowledgeable staff. Thumbs up. You can tell the owner/manager takes alcohol seriously, and makes sure the staff keeps up on new beers, beer styles, etc. I drink beer at the Cove because they have the best selection in Baton Rouge (by far), but they also have an excellent selection of Whisky (Whiskey/Scotch/Burbon) and other liquor. While the staff has an awesome knowledge of beer, their expertise does not extend to cocktails. That doesn't affect me, but it makes bringing my wife there harder. She usually orders an apple martini. I've heard they are opening a cocktail bar next door, so I'm sure their mixed drinks will get on par with the beer and scotch soon. I can't really comment on the weekend crowd, but during the week, everybody seems laid back, and a little older than a college bar (mid twenties to early thirties). Smoking is allowed at the bar, but you can't smoke in the booths, so either way you should be good. Prices are reasonable, but if you want to you can spend copious amounts of cash. For instance, I had a taste of Brew Dogs Tactical Nuclear Penguin (which is billed as the worlds strongest beer), a $100+ bottle of beer. I'm pretty sure the only place you can get it in Baton Rouge is The Cove. One final thing - they don't have any beer on tap. I understand that decision, but I still find it odd.
(5)Marcy S.
This place has the best selection of liquor in Baton Rouge. The space is a little small and can get smokey, but it a great place to meet up for drinks. Unfortunately, they don't open until 6 so you have to work late if you want after work drinks.
(4)Mike B.
I really like the set-up here. You can have two different experiences in the same place, which makes it a worthwhile venture. There is a smaller bar/ tap room in the front that is a pretty typical set-up, fairly lit, good for bigger groups where you can push together bar tables, and a couple of pool tables. But the real fun is heading to the back...a pretty dimly-lit space with really fun decorations and atmosphere (very pirate-esque). As you've read and will read, the beer and whiskey selection is out of this world. In the back, it is mostly bottled beer and whiskeys while the tap room is in the front. The servers and bartenders are well-versed in the libations the bar offers and can assist with folks who have a hard time making s decision. That happens when you have several hundred options in front of you! If you're in town...DO elect to check this place out!
(4)Gabriel A.
I used to pretty much live in this bar when i lived and worked close by it. It's one of my favorite bars in Baton Rouge. They have an extensive variety of liquors and beers from all over the world, even from my home town Honduras. They can make anything you want even caipiriñas (don't know if I spelled that right), a drink that is originally from Brazil that is amazing. They set up is nice and fancy too. I recommend it to everyone.
(5)Cameron K.
Holy beer porn! I loved this place! They have a huge selection of beer and a cocktail list that is well thought out and easily 10 pages long. The set up is weird. If you want beer, then you have to get it at one bar. Want a craft cocktail? You have to get it at a different bar. If you are with people that have different tastes, you will spend a little time away from each other. I can't imagine trying to have a tab at this place and your date wants one thing and you want the other. I also wish that the bartender had more knowledge of beer in general.

Comparatively, there are no other bars like this in the city of Baton Rouge. It has a serious selection of beers ranging in all tastes and prices to accomodate their mixed crowd. It's every thing from a service industry bar to a drinking establishment for those with money find their most glorious of prohibition era libations. Because Baton Rouge is a college town, there are limited opportunities to experience something like that as their most prolific bars are frequented by students without taste or money to pay for it, even if they did have it. In larger cities, there are several bars that are akin to this one where they specially craft cocktails from the freshest local ingredients (from the surrounding perimeter of the city), so when I experience Tom, the bar owner, sassing me, I'm not a happy camper. When I've unloaded serious money on the drinks I purchase in his bar, I expect to be treated as a valued customer. If you're of the mind that you are going to snub a patron for their drink selection, don't put it on your menu! It's also incredibly bothersome to see anything that is a WalMart generic brand being used when some of the cocktails are upwards of fifteen to twenty dollars. I want something that is organic, local, and sourced for that price! If you cannot keep up with the demand on your product, adjust your ordering procedures for the high quality ingredients... or at least go through the effort of hiding the generic label from your customers. On certain cocktails you're required to pay a deposit for using whatever proper glass is necessary to create the perfect drinking experience. Are you kidding me?! If the staff cannot do their job in keeping up with the sterling silver Mint Julep cups, hold them accountable or use something silver-plated instead, but don't alienate your paying customers by treating them like potential thieves. And, although the Juleps are not served in the proper glass at Sullivan's, they taste better, and I don't have to deal with such an atrocious, unheard of policy. The theme is a serious after thought and frankly kind of dumb. It gets very noisy as the place was once a large Jazzercise studio/gym. If you're of the mind that you're going to be able to hear anyone or anything when you're here, it's going to be impossible once it gets moderately busy. Moving the fancy cocktail lounge to the main bar was the worst idea as half the appeal was that it was tucked away in a quiet, smoke free environment with comfortable seating in which you could actually hear the other members of your party speaking.

The name fits the place perfectly as "The Cove" is as hidden from mainstream traffic as possible. If you are lucky enough to find this place than prepare yourself to enjoy the next several hours! Easily tops the list of best bars in the Baton Rouge area. As previously mentioned by other reviewers, The Cove has an incredible (overwhelming perhaps) selection of beers, single malt and blended scotchs from all six regions, absinthes, gins, vodkas and everything you could desire to drink. As far as pricing is concerned, it may appear initially that the bar is expensive, but upon closer look, the bar really does provide great value products. For example, while not quite the Roosevelt in New Orleans, but still well made, a Sazerac at The Cove costs an affordable $5.50. With other additional daily drink specials, The Cove certainly won't necessarily break the bank. The bartenders are outstanding not only in their ability to make drinks, but also in their knowledge of all 450+ beers! They are very personable and remember your name throughout the evening. The owner is a very friendly person who was cracking jokes and helping out his employees. How many bars can you go into now-a-days and even see the owner working? For me, the only negative is leaving the bar smelling like an ashtray, but I am a nonsmoker and the bar choses to be a smoking bar. No problem. All in all, this bar is excellent, and if you are looking for a quieter (non LSU student but still under 35) relaxing bar with an excellent selection of products not found in stores, The Cove is your place!!
(5)Donnie C.
Being a sailor, it gets 3 stars. Huge selection of alcohol! It is a diverse crowd. I found the pirate motif a bit cheesy since none of it is authentic. Also, the night I went I noticed the owner sitting at the end of the bar cautiously watching his employees measure all the alcohol accurately! I could tell the bartenders were not comfortable.

Great selection

When we walked in I was impressed! I love the wall displays of any type of alcohol your heart would desire. The staff was very friendly and informative..... The tables were somewhat dark and could have used a litte more lighting. I'm not sure if the white haired man was the owner or manager, but he was not very friendly! In Baton Rouge it's very important to be friendly and interactive with your customers...or people just won't go back! So overall the presentation was great! The last impression was of the guy...barely looking or talking to us as we left. :-(

I have been coming to the cove for a while and have yet to find a more impressive bar in Louisiana. The cove has everything, even if it is a little scattered. First off, this bar is BIG. It's more like three bars in one. The front bar, which is sectioned off from the back, is my favorite part. It's a tap room with +75 beers, most of which you can't find anywhere else in Baton Rouge. The decor could use be a little nicer, but whatever. The main bar is in the back and I am always amazed by the pure size of it. The owner Tom has gone out of his way to supply this massive bar with every beer, scotch, and other spirits he can get his hands on. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The pirate "theme" is neat but kinda pointless. Off to the side is the cocktail bar where bartenders handcraft modern and old school cocktails. They also have a great selection of absinthe and will set you up with your own little fountain. There is so much more to say about the cove I could write a freaking novel
(5)Sonia S.
Update- Bartender Joey contacted me to apologize for the service I received. I really appreciate when businesses take time to reach out- Thank you!
(3)Marielle S.
This is a really neat little bar. Not only do they have TONS of different beers (pretty much anything you could want) but they have a huge whiskey and scotch selection. I got my usual Harp, but the b/f and his friend shared a $30 glass of Whiskey. I'm not sure what type it was and I don't drink the stuff, but they were saying how smooth and tasty it was. Feeling adventurous and in the mood for something kind of fancy? Check out the shelf of "unaffordable Scotches". Yeah, you read that right. You can actually buy shots of well aged scotch for as much as $300. I would love to meet the person who can afford that. They also had a beer for $135 that was 45% alcohol. Um... maybe next time.
(4)Alexandra H.
This place is fabulous. The bartenders are really personable and they really know how to sell their numerous number of beers and liquors. Honestly? Where else in Baton Rouge can you find a bar with 700 whiskies? The only sad thing is that it's kind of unassuming, almost too unassuming. It's set back in a shopping center with extremely unrelated stores. However, don't pass this little gem up. The quality, as well as, the quantity of the beer and liquor here will astound you!
(5)Alison D.
Dude, Joey is the shit. If you want a history lesson with your drink, walk up and tell him what you like. Shannon is training, and she's going to be awesome!! I can't wait to visit again!!!
(5)Nicole M.
This bar has the best bloody mary's I've ever had! The bartender, Joey, took his time and hand crafted the drink completely from scratch, and even smoked the drink with a special blend of spices, which I have never seen done before!! Two thumbs up!
(5)Naveed B.
I've had to update my review to five stars. This is probably the best bar in Baton Rouge at the moment. They have the largest alcohol selection in the city. They also have the largest beer selection I have ever seen. It's bigger than anything I've seen even in Houston or New Orleans. They have really stepped up their game in their tap room. They have at least 60 taps at the moment(though it may be at around 70 now). They are even carrying Goose Island now. They also have recently added a new cocktail bar. It is a very impressive cocktail bar. The cocktail menu is approximately 20 pages long and has drinks of all varieties. That being said they do take a long time to make and are expensive. Then again they are done very traditionally, as they even hammer your ice for you. This place has definitely stepped up its game since my original review which was right around when they opened.
(5)Keith A.
My friend took me here when I was visiting town. The cove does a good job of keeping away people there just to drink bud or coors. You have to walk back a bit to get to the real bar The staff was very knowledgeable on their ginormous selection. When I say the selection is ginormous, it's a bit of an understatement. They have almost 2 pages of mikellers to choose from amongst other things. The beers were priced pretty well for what they are. I liked that you had to pay $4 for a bud while only paying $4.50 for a quality hefeweizen or something of that nature. They want you to have the good stuff. I enjoyed the cove a lot. I wasn't here for too long, so maybe my rating is slightly lower than if I was able to really dig into it here. Still, impressed is the word that best describes things for me
(4)Trevor R.
I love the atmosphere of The Cove. I just wish there were more people when I went. I don't care to be in crowded bars but this one can be pretty sparse at times. The beer selection is unrivaled in Baton Rouge. If you want to try some unique beers or whiskeys/bourbons, you need to go to the cove. It's very dark and dungeon like but also very friendly and stays away from the underground feel. Definitely reccomend going here.
(4)Mali C.
Louisiana still has smoking in bars unfortunately. The place is sparsely decorated but who really gives a s$&t when they have the biggest selection of liquor and beer in town and the staff is tops on their booze smarts bonus is that they are willing to help you figure out your drink of the night. Sure there are better hang out spots with comfy chairs but for selection alone they get 5 stars. I didn't hang out in the cocktail lounge which looked like a cool option complete with pool table. Next time!
(5)Lisa J.
I'm torn between a 2 star and a a 4 star rating on this place, so I guess I'll split the difference and go with 3 stars. 4 star: This place has a RIDICULOUS selection of beers and single malt scotch. There are 19 (9.5 front and back) pages in tiiiiny font listing out their beers - it just goes on and on. The scotch selection is freaking incredible - 349 to choose from, and some of them very rare and hard to find. I always have to use all my willpower here so I don't end up buying $40 drams. 2 star: the bar area is kind of sparsely decorated and boring outside of the flags and a painting of a kraken. Yawn. The bigger problem, though, is the glassware. Several times now when I've ordered a scotch the glass I've received has kind of smelled like wet dog. That's... not really ok when you're paying $15 for 3 ounces of a single malt; the smell is as important as the taste. I've gotten around this problem by requesting my scotch in a short glass, rather than the glasses they usually put their scotch in, but it's still a little ucky to think about. Anyway, I can tell that this will be a staple while I'm working in Baton Rouge - I expect to be here a couple of times a month, at least. If they fix the glassware problem, I'll definitely up the rating!
(3)Robert R.
For overall atmosphere and clientele, I would give this place one star. Their only saving grace which raises them up to two stars is their massive beer selection. That being said, while they may have what you want, be prepared to spend about 20 minutes reading their beer menu. To me, that is just too long. There is such a thing as having too big of a selection, and the cove has it. The clientele reflect that; they are snobby. Very snobby, and the air that they put out is just off putting. The bar is very dive-y, which usually I don't mind. In fact, I usually love pirate themed things. But the decor here is so half-assed that it is just upsetting. Most of the drinks seem really over priced too. I would likely not go back, unless I happened to be craving a specific beer that only they carry. Which is unlikely considering that baton rouge has a lot of bars with large beer selections - I'll take the chimes over this place any day. Or if I'm looking for the true dive atmosphere, the vineyard will always win out.
(2)Norm S.
I was thirsty and the cove has more than enough to quench it. I have a feelin this place might get full of skinny jeans during the weekends... But during the week it is fine.
